New Music for Brass

As a young musician, brass was my first love and so as a slightly older composer, one that I revisit often in my writing. I have written pieces for solo trombone, young brass ensembles and arranged music for a variety of ensembles and levels of ability. From Carnival, to Christmas, I have music to suit all occasions. Contact me for costs, if you wish to find out more, or want to commission your own piece for you or your group.

The Lofthouse Suite

Banner 1.jpg

In  March 2019, I was commissioned as part of Edgelands Arts, by the National Coal Mining Museum for England to write a new piece of music for young brass players, exploring the coal mining heritage of the local area. Using poetry written by local people about the Lofthouse Colliery Disaster of 1973 as inspiration for the piece, I wrote a piece in 3 short movements called the Lofthouse Suite. In early May I then delivered a composition workshop with young people exploring how we generate ideas for new composition and graphic score, alongside a banner painting workshop led by Tony Wade and Helen Thomas.

The piece is written for 8 intermediate players, and you can purchase the score from me directly by emailing charliewellsmusic@gmail.com. Kippax Band kindly offered to record the piece for me and you can hear the final movement, 'Homeward' above.

Shout Sister Shout!

I was pleased to be able to bring a new all female ensemble to Wakefield, thanks to seed funding from Long Division 2018. Since then we have also performed together at Nostell Priory for Nostell Nights and now meet semi-regularly at drop in sessions designed to encourage women back to playing or simply to enjoy non-traditional ensemble playing in a supportive environment.

This is a space for female horn players to be loud, raucous, quiet, sweet, clever, bold and harmonious!  It is an opportunity to bring players from all brass backgrounds together to play new music together. Inspired by the trombone shout band music of the United House of Prayer for all People, our music is designed to lift the soul and move the feet.

Shout Sister Shout are currently taking a break due to space constraints. If you are interested in finding out more, or coming along to a session, please contact me on charliewellsmusic@gmail.com
