We are from...

As a human, an artist, a storyteller and producer, I am #MadeinWakefield, so I am really pleased and proud to be able to bring all elements of my practice together in a project for Our Year 2024 made possible with funding from @MyWakefield @OurYear2024 #CultureGrantsWFD

We are From... will bring together creative heritage work I have done in the District over the last 15 years, alongside new stories from people across Wakefield and the 5 Towns in to a new song cycle, which will be performed by musicians from across the District and beyond, in a one off spectacular. I’m especially excited to be able to work with Rachel Modest Inder Goldfinger Hardeep Sahota Nick Wells and Pete Rosser to bring this together along with a whole score of wonderful community musicians from Wakefield. There will be lots of opportunities to take part and lend your story, through words, voices and instruments to this celebration of our shared heritage so if you are interested in participating or performing or both, please contact me on the usual channels and I’ll be in touch.

Opportunities for participation include

  • Being part of the Community Choir - Gospel workshops, singing workshops and performing music and spoken word in the final performance

This is open to individuals and groups of singers to take part, you don't need experience, just a love of singing and being part of something bigger. Children under 16 will need the permission of an adult to attend and those under 14 will need to be accompanied by an adult to rehearsals and performances.

  • Being part of the Community Horn Section - Music workshops and performing in the final performance. This is open to individuals and groups of players to take part, I'm looking for people grade 4 standard and above ideally, but I'm always happy to have a chat. Children under 16 will need the permission of an adult to attend and those under 14 will need to be accompanied by an adult to rehearsals and performances.

  • Lyric Writing and Poetry Workshops

Helping to develop the words that will form the basis of the new song cycle and spoken word elements of the piece.

  • Soundscape and Foley Workshops

Helping to create and develop ideas for the soundscapes that will weave between the music in the final performance

  • Story Gathering

I'm looking for individuals or groups of people that would like to tell me their stories of living or growing up in Wakefield which will inspire the songs and may form part of the stories woven around the music in the finished piece.
